Reunion Photos

And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards the point to be born?

With apologies to Mr. Yeats, it’s none other than the first third-millennial reunion of the Hyde Park High School Class of ’63 — with the guest appearances of other class members and some of our beloved teachers.

If you weren't there in June, 2000, we missed you, and you missed a wonderful weekend where decades disappeared and old friends were reunited.  Don't despair!  We're going to do this again.

This page contains your comments about our reunion.

I want to take this opportunity to thank Al Frankenburger, Al's wife Mary, and Iris Mitlin for putting together a first rate event.  Al and Mary spent endless hours making sure that we had a place to gather Friday night after dinner, were fed and sheltered at the Point, were provided with HP Alum T-shirts when the weather turned cool, and had music to dance to at our Saturday evening party. Iris deserves the credit for providing a wonderful setting for our dance in the beautiful arched ceiling hall atop Ida Noyes Hall at the University of Chicago.  In addition she made sure we didn't go hungry or thirsty by providing us with the caterer for the evening.  And, thanks again to Joel Neuberg for getting us all together.

I have so many great memories of the reunion, but will only list a few; I wait to hear from you for yours and will add them here.

Mr. Rosenshine handing out history papers at the Point!  None for me, but I'm sure I had none worth saving.

Mr. Black so eloquently touching his former students again. [Press release for upcoming book]

Merry Selk: This is to give ENTHUSIASTIC THANKS to Joel Neuberg, Bill Multack, Al
Frankenberger & everyone else who made the AITCHPE Chicago Reunion party so much fun.

WHAT A GREAT PARTY! Figuring out which of these grownups was which kid from the HP hallways...seeing two of our most wonderful teachers, Tim Black and Baruch Rosenshine...flying from one conversation to another at the Point, at the Ramada (50th on the Lake), and at the gloriously beautiful Ida Noyes hall...delicious food...nice people (all of us, including some very cute kids & pix of some very handsome 20+ year olds). A great treat, overall. Thank you for the energy and organization and great goodwill that went in to making this so nice for so many long-lost friends.

Amrita Salm: I second that... it was good to see everyone & I'm sure everyone gratefully appreciates the love, effort, energy & time that went into making it what it was for all of us. My thanks to the organizers, workers (you too, Iris) and to the participants, their spouses who must have felt a little left out some of the time and to Chicago for cooperating with the weather. And especially Joel for following up on the idea & of course to Pam.

Barbara Cronin: Me too, as to everything!!!! Now we all have to keep in touch which should be fairly easy with the website. Or maybe a road trip, for those of us who love to travel. How many states do we represent? We need a few foreign bases... another site for a future reunion.

Kathy Karjala: I thought it went really well, and I'm delighted we finally did it. It was wonderful seeing you all, and I hope to do so again soon! Good luck to you all.

Lynda Hoffman: I ditto all the remarks. It was a wonderful time of reconnecting with roots. Hyde Park was and is a special place and produced, at least from what I saw and remember one of the most humanitarian, intelligent, compassionate and fun loving crowds I know. Thanks to all of you for being you and especially to the organizers for making the opportunity for all the fun and feelings possible. Let's do it again.

Joel Neuberg: Among the high points not yet mentioned was seeing a substantial group doing the Snake (I saw it only on tape since I was taking Mr. Black home and missed that dance); seeing Carey do the Bird; seeing someone smiling from ear to ear dancing with Sharon Newell; staying up late enough to get a call from Steve Cotton's parents for the first time in 40 years.

Archie Julien: Fabulous almost seems insufficient to describe seeing friends and associates with whom I have lost contact for 40 years. My personal previous record was seeing friends again after about 12 years, so you might be able to imagine my joy. In fact, because of this reunion, I got an email from a Parkside classmate I haven't seen since graduation in 1956! ... It was a truly incredible experience for which I am deeply grateful to you, Merry, Joel, Carey, and the many others who labored to put this together. In fact, a couple of us have already started looking forward to an annual event every mid-June weekend. I do think we may have lost a few to Father's Day, so maybe we might improve things by avoiding a conflict.
